Nepal Receives First Shipment of Electric Vehicles Through Newly Opened Korala Border Crossing
Korala border point in Upper Mustang has opened as a new trade route, facilitating the entry of 151 electric vehicles (EVs) into Nepal, mainly from brands like BYD and Omoda & Jaecoo.. Over 100 EVs have entered Nepal within eight days of the Korala route opening, alongside seasonal goods such as clothing, electronics, and cosmetics transported in medium containers.. Despite providing relief for automobile importers ahead of the Dashain festive season, challenges like long distances, higher logistics costs, and limited charging infrastructure remain; temporary charging stations are being set up to support EV operations.. The government opened the Korala route to ensure uninterrupted supply of essential goods during the festive season, despite it being longer and more remote from the capital.. As EV demand rises in Nepal, developing charging infrastructure along the Korala route will be crucial to support the growing number of electric vehicles.
